Cyber Safety for Kids

Unlike us, our children have been born into a digital world.
They are digital natives navigating through their young lives with technology at their fingertips.
Children today have access to a multitude of devices in a variety of locations. At home they watch smart TV’s, use computers and laptops, smartphones, tablets, e-readers, gaming consoles…….whew!
Having all of these devices on-hand opens up a whole new world of experiences. What is it that they are using these devices for?
Their activities have the potential to expose them to inappropriate material such as explicit words, nudity, violence, gambling and cyber-bullying. Supervision of children on devices is key to pro-actively minimising the chances of them coming across such material. Open and frequent conversations about the dangers of the internet are also a must. Another helpful tool is the setup of parental controls for internet safety.
Here are some stats that popped up when I did a quick search:
- 7 – 17 year olds who would freely give our their home address…….29%
- Average age of first internet exposure to pornography is……….8 years old
- Parents that believe that their children know more about technology than they do……..41%
- 12-15 year olds who admit they have not met 1 of 3 ‘online friends’
